Sorry, I was (am) a massive (huge understatement) fan of Wham! and can still recite all of their song lyrics. I also still remember the address of where Andrew Ridgeley used to live, with his parents, in Bushey. Though, just for the record, I didn't go all stalker-like and search for his home, it was a school friend of mine who took it upon herself to look up the name Ridgeley in an old telephone book (do actual phone books still exist?) and found only two Ridgeley’s listed in Bushey and somehow knew which address I should ask my mum to take me to.
So, we went. My mum knocked on the door (I was too scared) and Jenny (Andrew’s mum) opened it. I stood there like a lemon, gazing down the hall at what I had decided was definitely Andrew’s black leather jacket, which he wore on the ‘Fantastic’ album cover, slung over a hook. OMG! I was actually at the door that Andrew walks through every day and breathing in the air from his house - the same air that he breathes! OMG! OMG! It was a very special moment in my life.
Sad news - Andrew wasn’t home. Good news, Jen (reckon I can call her that) was happy to sign my 'Make It Big' album. Happy times.
But all was not lost on the Andrew autograph front. My step-mum saw him at a rugby do she was at with my dad and promptly grabbed some paper, in the form of a cheque as that’s all she had, and approached him. He made the cheque payable to me (obvs!), paid me lots of love and signed it. Amazing!
I ran into school the next day shrieking and showing off the cheque that had already been put in a frame for me. I still have it, but it must be at my mums as I couldn’t find it. However, whilst looking, I found my Wham! scrapbook and newspaper cuttings under the bed…here’s a glimpse.
So, school’s out for summer and so is the sun and I hope that your holiday plans, whether abroad or in this country, are going swimmingly.
“…pack your bags and leave tonight, don’t take your time, gotta move your feet, don’t you miss the flight...cool, cool, cool, cool...."
